Freedom Fridays
Inspiration Behind Freedom Fridays
Freedom Fridays came from the idea that Google had a number of years ago with something called "20% Time". With 20% Time, employees of Google where encouraged to spend 20% of their time during the day creating projects that they thought could benefit Google. Some of the things that came from 20% time include Gmail, Google News, and AdSense.
Freedom Fridays were born with Mr. Parslow in 2015 when students were encouraged to spend each Friday creating a project that THEY wanted to create. The project typically would last for 5-6 weeks and could be ANY design they wanted to create (PG Rated of course).

Here are the rules:
- The project you pick must be created using any Adobe software on our computers (Photoshop, Illustrator, others), Autodesk Maya (3D), Unity (an account will need to be created first; see Parslow if you want to do this), or another program.
- You can only work on this project on Fridays (no makeup work or quizzes for me, no messing around on the computer, or no working on work for other clases).
- How is it graded? You will get credited for creating your design as well as creating an artist statement for me on the project (which will go in your portfolio; see image on the right). You will NOT be graded on how well you did, errors, mistakes, etc. This is strictly a participation assignment (as long as you complete it and give me a good, well written artist statement, you will get the full points).
- Your project should last approximately 4 weeks with the last week being the day you write the artist statement.
- You can work on this outside of class as well (for example, Titan Time)
Need Some Ideas?
- Do a google search for "Photoshop Tutorials". There are a TON of them out there!
- Know of something you want to create (for example, the Obama Hope Poster)? Look up tutorials for this as well (in Google, you could type "Tutorial + Obama Poster").
- Does your club or sport need a design created (for example, a poster or flyer?)?
- Make something personal to you (for example, a collage or a birthday card for a family member coming up).
- Throughout the year, I will be finding out if teachers or coaches need designs created for them that you could use for this project. There will also be design contests that I will post on here that you can create a design for (for example, PTA Reflections).
Artist Statement Writing Instructions
In your artist statement for each Freedom Friday project you create, your write up should include the following:
- Your audience
- How you hope the audience will react to your project
- Why you chose this project
- Quick summary (2-3 sentences) of major items you added
- Challenges you faced (and how you corrected them)
- Overall how you think the project came out/final thoughts on it
